Supervision of Supervision

For clinicians seeking to become Approved Supervisors in Washington State, I offer supervision of supervision to support the required 25 hours of consultation.

(Approved Supervisor Support)

Shannon Webb, LICSW, LCSW, BCD

Clinical supervision is not a single role—it evolves over time.

The Supervisor Development Pathway reflects how clinicians grow into the role of supervisor, moving from structured teaching and skill-building toward consultation, collaboration, and advanced clinical thinking.

This framework informs my approach, supporting clinicians in developing not only competence, but confidence and clarity in their supervisory role.

Why This Matters

Many clinicians are trained to provide therapy—but not to provide supervision.

The transition from clinician to supervisor involves a meaningful shift in responsibility, perspective, and professional identity. Without structured support, supervisors may feel uncertain in how to:

  • Balance support with accountability

  • Navigate evaluation and gatekeeping responsibilities

  • Manage ethical and power dynamics

  • Support supervisees across different developmental stages

Supervision of supervision provides a space to develop these capacities intentionally, rather than learning through trial and error.

Where Are You in the Pathway?

You may be:

  • Beginning to supervise and focusing on structure, documentation, and foundational skills

  • Growing into a mentorship role and developing your supervisory voice

  • Navigating the ethical and evaluative responsibilities of supervision

  • Seeking consultation as a more experienced supervisor to refine your approach

This work meets you within that process.

What This Work Looks Like

Supervision of supervision may include:

  • Reviewing your supervision structure and approach

  • Exploring supervisee dynamics and developmental needs

  • Strengthening documentation and regulatory alignment

  • Navigating ethical dilemmas and evaluation decisions

  • Developing your identity and confidence as a supervisor

This is a collaborative, reflective process grounded in real-world clinical practice.

Moving Into Supervisory Practice

Supervision is a distinct clinical role that requires intention, reflection, and support.

If you are stepping into, or refining, your role as a supervisor, this work offers a structured and thoughtful space to support that development.

Supervision of Supervision (25-Hour Requirement)

As clinicians move into supervisory roles, the work shifts.

Supervision of supervision focuses on:

  • Navigating the transition from clinician to supervisor

  • Managing responsibility, evaluation, and ethical accountability

  • Developing a supervision style that is both structured and flexible

  • Supporting supervisees across varying levels of experience

I offer consultation for clinicians completing the 25-hour supervision of supervision requirement in Washington State, grounded in this developmental framework.
